Staining Your Deck This Summer? Use Caution When Discarding Oil-Soaked Rags

Summer is quickly approaching and many people use the warmer, drier weather to re-stain their decks. Did you know that improperly disposing of rags used to stain wood is one of the most common causes of house fires?

Rags soaked with oil-based paint, linseed oils, stains, varnishes, paint thinners, polyurethane, teak, etc. can spontaneously combust if not disposed of properly. To avoid this risk, instead of leaving the rags in a pile or in a plastic trash bag, put them in a metal container with a tight fitting lid and fill the rest of the container with water. Seal the container and do not reopen it.

This will keep the oil from oxidizing and prevents the rags from heating up and catching on fire.

Contact your local waste management company for their policy on disposing of the can and contents. You may also contact your local municipality for their hazardous waste collection schedule to dispose of the used materials.
