All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

I am renting a car on vacation. Do I need to buy the rental insurance?

"I am renting a car on vacation. Do I need to buy the rental insurance?"

This is one of the questions our clients ask us the most frequently. The answer is that you should have some kind of coverage on the rental vehicle, whether you opt to go through the rental company or use your existing commercial auto policy.

Here are some things to consider next time you rent a vehicle:

* Rental coverage can be included in your commercial policy. Be sure to rent your vehicle using your business’s name, not your personal.

* The commercial policy rental coverage provides liability only. You will want to check with your agent to see if you also have Hired Non-Owned Auto Physical Damage. That way you are covered for any unpredictable moment.

*If an accident occurs you will still be responsible for paying your deductible.

* Using your commercial policy can be more cost-effective than the rental company coverage since they charge daily.

* If you travel internationally, you’ll want to check that your destination is within your commercial insurance company’s coverage area. Otherwise, you may need to purchase rental car insurance.

Bottom Line: Always call your friends in the insurance business before you rent! We can answer your questions about travel insurance, too.
