When winter weather strikes, harsh driving conditions present challenges to even the most experienced drivers. Educating and helping to prepare your newly-licensed teen driver is crucial this time of year. Take some time this season to make sure your teen is well prepared before hitting the road.
Remind them to keep their gas tank close to full and to have a cell phone charger in their vehicle.
Help your teen put together an emergency kit which includes blankets, a flashlight, emergency flares, water, nonperishable food items, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, jumper cables and a snow brush and ice scraper.
Make sure their tires are properly inflated. Over- or under- inflated tires will not grip the road properly.
Visibility is extremely important! Invest in a pair of high-quality windshield wiper blades.
Lastly, make sure your teen knows the importance of taking a few extra minutes to clear snow, ice and debris from all windows, lights and the roof of the vehicle.
